Clean water can be contaminated by various kinds of waste. This event is called water pollution, namely the inclusion of other components or substances into the aquatic environment so that water quality (quality) water becomes disturbed. The most common sources of polluters come from industrial waste, agriculture, and residential.
Factory waste (industrial waste containing heavy metals are often streamed or dumped into the river. The result of this waste disposal, the river becomes polluted. The kinds of heavy metals contained in the waste industry, among others:
- Mercury
- Lead
- Cadmium
Heavy metal is a very dangerous pollutants for human beings. If this contaminated river water flowing into the ocean so sea water also became contaminated flows into the ocean so sea water also became contaminated. Heavy metals in marine animals such as fish, prawns, and shellfish will be accumulated in the body, so that if this man dikomsumsi marine animals, as a result is very dangerous.
Around the year 1953 to 1960 Japan recorded 111 people died or injured due to consuming fish that originated in the Bay of Minamata, known as the tragedy of Minamata. The Bay is polluted by mercury from a plastic factory. Later in the year 1966 in Guatemela recorded 20 people died and 45 people injured mercury poisoning.
Pollutants that come from the factory waste can also seep into ground water that becomes the source of water for drinking, washing, and bathing. Contaminated ground water are usually difficult once returned into clean water.
